Description
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a notification urging its affiliated schools to participate in the 55th Universal Postal Union (UPU) International Letter Writing Competition for Young People, scheduled to be held in 2026. The initiative is being conducted by the Department of Posts, and CBSE has directed schools to circulate the information among students and conduct the competition at the school level.
Theme Focused on Modern Communication
For the 2026 edition, students are required to write a letter to a friend highlighting the importance of human relationships in an increasingly digital world. With online communication dominating everyday interactions, the theme encourages students to reflect on the emotional value of personal connections beyond screens and social media platforms. The objective is to inspire meaningful thinking along with creative writing.
Purpose of the Competition
As mentioned in the CBSE circular, the competition aims to enhance creative expression, improve writing and composition skills, and encourage deeper thinking among students. It also seeks to promote global understanding and friendship by allowing young minds to share ideas through the traditional art of letter writing.
By participating, students get an opportunity to express emotions, opinions, and viewpoints in a structured and impactful manner.
International Selection Process
The competition is overseen at the global level by the International Bureau of the Universal Postal Union. Each participating country submits its best national entry for international evaluation.
From these submissions, three global winners are selected and awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals, along with certificates and other prizes. The Gold Medal recipient may also be invited to visit the UPU Headquarters in Berne, Switzerland, or receive an alternative reward as decided by the organisation. In addition, special recognition certificates are given to selected participants.
Selection Process and Awards in India
Within India, the Department of Posts will organise the competition at Circle-level and National-level. At each stage, the top three entries will receive cash rewards and certificates.
The best entry at the national level will represent India at the international UPU competition, offering students a chance to showcase their talent on a global platform.
Language Choices Available
Students may write their letters in English or any language listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India. This flexibility ensures wider participation and allows students to express themselves comfortably in their preferred language. Detailed instructions and eligibility criteria are included in the annexures of the official circular.
Instructions for CBSE Schools
CBSE has instructed schools to conduct the competition in collaboration with the designated Nodal Officers of their respective postal circles or regions. The list of Nodal Officers will be shared separately and will also be accessible on the official India Post website. Schools are encouraged to actively promote the competition and motivate students to participate.
